So on Wednesday night, I watched what turned out to be a rather boring Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Boston Bruins and the Vancouver Canucks, in Vancouver. I say boring because blowouts never tend to be very exciting; especially when it’s two teams that you normally don’t care even a little about.

After the shouting was over and the Bruins were declared victorious, I stuck around to watch the presentation of the Conn Smythe and Stanley Cup trophies. As I watched, I was very proud to see that the fans in the arena in Vancouver stayed and gave a great, respectful standing ovations to goalie Tim Thomas and the Bruins as they celebrated their win.

I was very impressed by this because in years past when the Visiting team has won the cup, the fans of the home team seem to scatter leaving the celebrations to be done in a mainly empty arena. This always bugged me, but I was happy to see it wasn’t the case in a Canadian arena. So I tweeted as such:

“The respect that the Canucks fans are showing to Tim Thomas and the Bruins makes me more proud to be a Canadian than a win. #stanleycup”

Then I went to bed.

So, when I woke up Thursday morning to see the lunacy and chaos that erupted in Vancouver, I was more than a little pissed. Not just because of the needless destruction, not just because of the juvenile reactions, and not because of the absolute senselessness of it all. What really made me mad was that in this new context, my tweet made me look like I supported these arseholes.

So, let me clear the air: Canucks Fans in the arena, respectful and awesome. Outside the arena, jerks and morons.

My only hope I that now me might finally be able to look back and say that allowing large congregations like this to openly drink and do drugs in public places might not be the greatest of ideas. No matter who is in the Finals.
