On Monday night, we hitched our giddy-ups on over to the local movie theatre to see X-Men: First Class. Going into the movie, I had a lot of questions. Exiting the movie, I still had a lot of questions, but had a lot of fun not having them answered.

Off the top, let me just get one thing clear: X-Men: First Class is a great movie. It’s a lot of fun, with way more action that I was expecting. I was anticipating a lot of long conversations about morality in low-toned English accents, but instead what I got was a story that jumped right into things, and was fluid and interesting all the way through. I really did enjoy it much more than I thought I was going to.

Now, with that said I do have a few problems with the movie. Namely, how it relates to the previous X-Men movies. First Class was billed as something of a prequel, a setting of the stage of sorts. But in watching the movie, it seemed like they tried their damnedest to connect various strands of First Class to the previous movies, but then completely ignored some of the other plot points.

From the beginning the relationship First Class has to the other X-Men movies has been murky at best, and if the studio and creators had just done a Star Trek (2009)-style re-start, I think it would have been better than trying to “kinda” shoehorn certain aspects of continuity into the movies as a whole. Let me reiterate though, I really liked the flick.

I really hope that the inevitable sequels to First Class bring a whole new world of X-Men stories to the screen. I mean, could this be the start of some of the intergalactic fun with the Shi’Ar? Or could we see a whisker-costumed Wolverine show up at some point? The possibilities are limitless.

But do me one favour, Fox. Forget the others exist. Build us something new, and we will come.
