There’s a family of sparrows that live underneath the balcony above mine. It’s kind of neat to be out on my balcony reading or what have you and see them swooping about, bringing food to their chicks, teaching them to fly, etc. What’s kind of fascinating to me about them is their fierce protectiveness towards their nest. The second another bird, even another sparrow gets close to the nest they are swooping out and knocking them out of midair.
I bring this up only because I just witnessed the ultimate knock-down, drag-out fight between two of theses birds outside my window. They looked like Riggs and Vorstedt at the end of Lethal Weapon 2. I half expected one of them to drop a cargo container on the other.
And yes, this is the stuff that fascinates me while you are at work all day.
Any way, I also wanted to mention the release of a new album by one of my favourite rappers, Eminem. Recovery came out last week, and I have to say it’s Em at his finest. The Relapse album was all right, with a few shining gems amongst some silliness. Recovery is the best stuff I’ve heard from Eminem since The Eminem Show. It’s hard, pissed off and smart, which is exactly where Eminem truly shines as a lyricist. It’s really great stuff.
Finally, we’re gearing up for the separation anxiety of Jamie taking a bit of a vacation next week. His absence is going to be hard (especially on him as the vacation includes the words “all inclusive”) but we’ll be holding down here with some surprises that will hopefully take the edge off.
