As I approach the 6 monthiversary of my move to Montreal, I can’t help but note how easy a transition it’s been for me. The people here have been lovely and welcoming, and in return it’s been easy for me to embrace every aspect of living in this beautiful city.

Except one thing…

As a Toronto native, when it comes to professional Hockey there is only one team: The Toronto Maple Leafs. I bleed blue and white when the puck is dropped. The Montreal Canadiens (for those not hockey-savvy) are the arch nemesis of the Leafs. They are the Red Sox to our Yankees, the Colts to our Patriots, and the… well, Canadiens to our Leafs.

So here’s the problem. This year, the Leafs didn’t make the playoffs (for a change), but Montreal squeaked in on the last day of the season. They are currently embroiled in a battle with the Washington Capitals. I want to cheer for The Habs, I really do. They represent my current home, and I always like to see Canadian teams do well.

But, and God help me as I type this, every time Washington scores, I can’t help but smile a little inside.

The good news is that every time The Canadiens score, I cheer. But also, I die a little inside.

So I remain conflicted. This is going to be a long series…
