Sh*t Gets A Little Too Real
By Jeff Moss & Dan Simon

I got a bit of news this week that prompted me to do something that I haven’t done in a long, long time. Apparently, Bret “The Hitman” Hart is back in the WWE.

“What? Really? My All-Time Favourite Wrassler is back in action? I gotta see this!” I said to myself.

See, I had been big into wrestling during its boom of the late 1990’s into the early 2000’s. It’s funny, as the comic book world was imploding, WWE was just taking off, and now as the comic book world is expanding, it was wrestling I found to be imploding. Needless to say, I gave up on wrestling and with the exception of a few PPV events at a pal’s place here and there, I haven’t watched of missed it since.

So, I tuned into WWE RAW in hopes of catching a glimpse of my childhood (OK, adulthood too) hero. What I found was amazing. Virtually NOTHING has changed! The Undertaker, John Cena, even Shawn Michaels are all still there doing their thing. I thought this was noteworthy for two reasons:

1.) Knowing what I know about the pro wrestling world, it’s incredible that guys like Michaels and The Undertaker are still alive, let alone wrestling.

2.) This further cements the idea that wrestling is a male soap-opera.

Soaps can go on for decades with the same characters and stories, and clearly so can wrestling. Granted I haven’t watched for that a while, but based on the crowd at the event, I’d say the hunger is still there. But I was greatly amused by the fact that most of the show could have taken place 10 years ago, and the only difference would have been the lame pop culture references.

Also, I didn’t see Hart. So I guess I’m back in until I do. I’ve always been a sucker for a good story (or in this case a mediocre story propped up by bravado) so I might as well give it one more shot.

My pink tights have to be around here somewhere…
