Always a day (or in this case 5 years) behind the latest and greatest trends, I must announce that I have found a new favourite show.

Long has the medi-comedy Scrubs held top spot in my heart. I always knew I could count on JD and the crew to make me laugh, make me smile, and make the 14 year old girl deep inside my heart coo “awwwww!” . I related to those characters, and their lives mirrored my own. I count their series finale (because I refuse to acknowledge the existence of Scrubs: Season 9) as one of the greatest moments in TV history, and the best ending to a series since M*A*S*H.

But as with all good things, Scrubs came to its end, and I was left with a bit of a hole in my heart. I tried filling it with Glee, and various sporting events, but I just couldn’t find a show that affected me with the humor and emotion that Scrubs had carried. That is, until I stumbled upon How I Met Your Mother.

I had always heard about the show, friends raving about Neil Patrick Harris’ loveable Barney, and I knew that the show starred Alyson Hannigan, or Willow from the Buffy-verse, so I knew it was out there. As with many things in my life though, I wasn’t able to get into it until the timing was right. Until a void needed to be filled.

How I Met Your Mother is nothing short of brilliant. It’s funny in an original kind of way, its characters are sincere without being goofy and its situations are relatable without being silly. So much of Season One seemed to mirror my own life that at time it was eerie. That’s what makes great TV; The ability of a show to create a world and a vibe that is real, but with enough of a hint of the fantastic that it’s funny.

Now that I’ve run through Season 1, I’m going to have to head out and track down the next four seasons before I can start watching the new episodes. And to think, they laughed at me when I started stockpiling those Best Buy Gift Cards.
