At the time of this writing, two momentous things have occurred.

The first is that I have just returned from seeing Avatar (or “Space Pocahontas” as some have dubbed it). Clocking in at just under 3 hours, I have to say: This special effects-laden flick is fantastic.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy it, being that it seemed to rely so heavily on special effects. Often, the effects take over, and the movie suffers from a lacking storyline. Given the length of the movie, I was a bit cautious going into it, but the story truly drives the movie, and you find yourself completely caught up in the characters. I think Avatar borrows from a couple of its predecessors, but manages to do so in a way that makes it all seem new and fresh.

If you go, be sure and see Avatar in 3-D. It’s the first time I’ve seen a movie in the “new” 3-D (ie, no paper red/green glasses) and I was blown away. There were a prerequisite amount of “look at the cool 3-D stuff we can do” scenes, but it was breathtaking and added a whole new layer to the movie experience. If only that technology could have been around for films like Lord of The Rings, and Star Wars.

My one note though: Can we please let Sam Worthington have an Australian accent in one of his movies? His American accent really doesn’t work. Even when he’s blue.

The second notable happening is that I am settling in for my first real day off since almost August. With the store now closed on Mondays, I am able to have a real day to myself. Nowhere to go, no fridges to move, no planes or trains to catch, nothing. OK, I need to go to the bank, and the pharmacy, and pick up McCahan at the airport, but after the whirlwind of the last few months, that seems pretty tame.

And yes, I just wrote all that here so that I would remember to do it. Especially the McCahan part.

But first some sleeping in, and a Gold Medal Game for Canada in the World Juniors!!
