I think if He had used a better Art Director on those stones, then they would have found a way to make it work. Then I would have Biblical precedent to cite when I explode through a line of people walking so slowly they might as well be going backwards. No court would convict, I’m telling you.
So, as with most things I am a bit behind the times, but this weekend I had a chance to finally see the latest Kevin Smith flick, Zack and Miri Make A Porno. I gotta say, the movie was low-brow, crass, and absolutely filthy, but also one of the sweetest movies I’ve seen in a long time.
Kevin Smith has long been one of my favourite filmmakers, writers, and (based on his “Evening With…” DVDs) stand-up comics. In all of those different areas, what he does best is tell a story. Smith is able to create characters and situations with such sincerity and honesty that it’s impossible not to get caught up in it. Zack and Miri is no exception. What I really like about his movies is once you get to know the world Kevin smith lives in a bit, you can see all the very personal elements and events that are peppered throughout the story. This makes his movies just that much easier to slip into and feel like you’re a part of.
Zack and Miri is the story of two people who don’t know they love each other, wrapped in a world of vulgarity the likes of which most of us haven’t imagined. Not since the invention of the internet any way. But it’s the contrast of the dirty stuff in the movie that makes the love story that much sweeter, and what caps the whole deal is that the love story is never overshadowed by said vulgarity. Smith has managed to find a perfect balance.
Oh, and if Seth Rogen isn’t every dude my age’s best friend, I don’t know who is. He is easily the most relatable guy in movies, and the projects he chooses are equally relatable.
So yeah, rent this flick if you haven’t seen it yet. Prepare to be grossed out (I never thought I’d see so much of Jason Mewes), but also prepare to be smiling when the whole thing’s done.
