I am a giant idiot.

Friday, September 5th, 2008

So, to answer any and all questions you may have about this weekends outage:

Yes, I am a giant idiot.

In attempting to rebuild my professional portfolio site and create an area for another very talented writer we work with, I accidentally deleted all of the wordpress databases in one foul swoop. Another aspect of my act of idiocy is that since the move, I have not been doing any kind of backup of the database or the wordpress blog, that being one of those tasks that I figured I’d ‘get to’ eventually. Unfortunately, I did not get to it soon enough.

Over the weekend, I’ve been hunting through old backups and variousinternet caches in an attempt to recover as much of the data lost from the database. Unfortunately, not everything is recoverable.

So in doing so, I’ve managed to wipe out all of our registered users information, all of your comments, and the forums for No Reason. While the framework and designs (and the comics themselves) were not deleted, thankfully, everything else was.

Which means, dear readers, that if you wish to admonish me for my idiocy, or simply lend a supportive word via comments, you’ll have to re-register. For that, I apologize sincerely.

Currently, I’ve managed to return about 90% of the functionality of the site back up to standards, and even cleaned up a couple of old issues we were having. The content recovery is hovering at about 30%, but progress on getting most of it back is still chugging along. One feature I haven’t turned back on is the ’subscription’ service for new posts, as I don’t want mass emails sending out for the hundreds of posts I’m currently re-instating. That service will return this week though, so keep checking back with us.

Please don’t let this be an indicator of the service we strive to offer you here at No Reason - in learning from this huge mistake, I’ve already setup two separate backup systems.

I apologize for the interruption in service, and hope that once I’ve recovered the archives, you’ll take a look back through at the last two years of comedy we’ve been bringing you for free.

Live Long and Prosper,

Jamie
